Geranium sanguineum 'Frivolius Purple'

Geranium sanguineum 'Frivolius Purple'

from $8.00

I’m going to be straight here. I have no idea why hybridizers are calling this purple. It is much closer to a magenta leaning into purple. That said, it doesn’t mean I don’t love it. Sanguineums are the workhorses of the hardy geranium family (a couple of others are pretty darn good but that’s for another post). They have a long bloom time, they have charming foliage that often turns reddish in the fall, they are compact, well behaved, and are nearly indestructible. This particular selection was chosen for marketing because in addition to all that, it flowers a little earlier and longer, it’s compact habit and gently spreading nature make it an enviable ground cover, and it has larger flowers with a much richer color than others in the species. What more could you ask for!

  • · Rich purple flowers

  •  · Groundcover habit

  •  · Long bloom time

Hardy geraniums are easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. You may trim plants after flowering to shape and to stimulate new foliage growth. Plants tend to become leggy and/or flop with age, and in such case may be cut back to basal foliage to revitalize.

Blooms May–mid-July
