Iberis 'Mermaid Lavender'
Iberis 'Mermaid Lavender'
I don’t think Iberis is a common plant in gardens in the US. Even the older varieties - “plain” white flowered - are stellar in a rock garden or as edging. The evergreen foliage is tidy and can be trimmed up to keep neat little buns. The flowers literally cover the plant in the spring like a little mound of fresh snow. While looking to find one to replace the gem that I had in a former garden 25 years ago, I ran across this. Masses of Iberis flowers, not just with hints of purple - like the first few attempts at breeding in a color - but fully lavender masses of bloom! Brings tears to my eyes! In addition to being the strongest purple variety, it’s the first purple Iberis to extend the bloom season with rebloom in late spring and summer. Truly an amazing feat (is there a Nobel prize for horticulture…no… there should be and these guys should get it!) When not in flower it is a compact mound of lush green foliage that is generally evergreen. It will be very hard for me to part with a single one of these! I did get that white one too … They just make you smile.
